Mataroa is an album-musical inspired by a New Zealand ship of the same name, which in 1945 transported 200 young Greek intellectuals to Paris where they escaped the Greek Civil War. By using the concept of ‘rescue’ this project correlates the moment of disembarkation with the redemptive state that one can gradually acquire through an inner journey of self-exploration.
The album consists of 10 Lo-Fi Pop songs, where each of them represents experiences and feelings that a person would have gain from such a journey. On that basis, the thinking behind the design was to reflect the sense of itinerary that the project implies. By employing an allegorical tactic towards the Art Direction, we designed and conceived the record sleeve as a padded mailing envelope that a voyager could have sent to his/her family upon reaching their destination.
